How to Improve Typing Accuracy

Last updated: August 2026 • 6 min read

If you want to know how to improve typing accuracy and eliminate frustrating typos, you must understand that precision always precedes speed. When typists push their speed beyond their mechanical accuracy threshold, their brain encodes sloppy keystroke habits that require weeks to undo.

By practicing deliberate accuracy drills and maintaining an accuracy floor of 98%+, your typing speed will naturally accelerate while your backspace usage drops to zero.

4 Core Rules to Eliminate Typing Errors

1. The 80% Speed Rule

When practicing, slow your speed down to 80% of your maximum WPM. Typing at a relaxed tempo trains your neural pathways to strike the exact center of each keycap with clean finger articulation.

2. Use Opposite Shift Keys for Capitalization

Never use the same hand to hold Shift and strike a letter (e.g. typing capital 'A' with your left hand only). Always hold the right Shift key with your right pinky to capitalize left-hand letters, and vice versa.

3. Master Punctuation & Symbols

Train specifically on quotes, semicolons, and commas using our typing test with punctuation and coding typing test.

4. Resist the Urge to Mash Backspace

When you make a typo, pause for a split second, press Backspace deliberately once or twice, and re-strike the correct key. Rapid backspace mashing destroys your typing rhythm.
