Typing Terms Glossary: WPM, KPH, CPM & Definitions
Quick concise reference guide for typing speed acronyms, data entry metrics, accuracy calculation formulas, and touch typing vocabulary used across employment testing and competitive examinations.
WPM
Words Per MinuteThe international universal standard for measuring typing speed, mathematically standardized as typing 5 keystrokes (characters, punctuation, or spaces) in one minute. Because word lengths vary, counting arbitrary dictionary words would be inaccurate; standardized 5-character words ensure consistent scoring across all tests.
KPH / KDPH
Keystrokes / Key Depressions Per HourThe industry standard metric for measuring alphanumeric and 10-key numeric data entry speed, tracking total physical key presses over one hour. Commonly used in corporate data processing and Indian government recruitments (such as SSC CGL DEST at 8,000 KDPH, which equals ~27 WPM).
CPM
Characters Per MinuteThe total number of individual characters, letters, punctuation marks, and spaces typed within a 60-second window. CPM is commonly used in European typing assessments and programming benchmarks before dividing by 5 to convert into standard WPM.
Gross WPM
Gross (Raw) Words Per MinuteYour raw, unpenalized typing velocity calculated purely by total keystrokes typed over time, completely ignoring errors or misspellings. It measures raw finger execution speed but does not reflect actual work-ready accuracy or production quality.
Net WPM
Net (Adjusted) Words Per MinuteYour true operational typing speed calculated by subtracting uncorrected errors from your Gross WPM output. Net WPM is the mandatory score reported for employment screenings, typing certificates, and competitive civil service examinations.
Accuracy Rate
Keystroke Accuracy PercentageThe percentage of total keystrokes that precisely match the master target text without uncorrected errors. Professional office benchmarks mandate at least 95% accuracy, while legal and medical transcriptionists require 98% to 99% accuracy.
Touch Typing
10-Finger Touch Typing TechniqueA muscle-memory typing method where the typist operates all 10 fingers from the home row without looking down at the keyboard. It eliminates the cognitive delay of "hunt-and-peck" visual searching, typically doubling typing speed from 30 WPM to 60+ WPM.
Home Row
Home Row Keys (A S D F — J K L ;)The foundational horizontal middle row on standard QWERTY keyboards where fingers naturally rest between keystrokes. Raised tactile locator ridges on the "F" and "J" keys allow typists to orient their index fingers by touch without visual assistance.
Backspace Policy
Backspace Allowed vs Disabled (Civil Service)The rules governing error correction during timed tests. While standard tests permit Backspace at the cost of lost time, competitive exams like the Railway RRB NTPC CBTST strictly disable the Backspace key in software, forcing typists to maintain forward momentum without fixing mistakes.
WPS
Words Per SecondA real-time velocity metric showing how many standardized words are typed in a single second. For instance, typing at 60 WPM translates to exactly 1.0 WPS (5 keystrokes per second), while elite 120 WPM typists produce 2.0 WPS (10 keystrokes per second).
10-Key / Numpad
Numeric Keypad Data EntryThe compact grid of numbers (0–9) and mathematical operators located on the right wing of standard full-sized desktop keyboards. Evaluated for bookkeeping, bank teller, cashier, and accounting positions, where speed is measured in KPH.
