About the RRB NTPC Typing Assessment
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) conduct the Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) as a pivotal qualifying phase for Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) appointments across the Indian Railway zones. Positions contingent on CBTST clearance include Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist, Senior Time Keeper, Junior Clerk cum Typist, and Accounts Clerk cum Typist. Conducted across 21 regional RRBs (including RRB Allahabad, RRB Mumbai, RRB Kolkata, and RRB Chennai), the exam requires a net typing speed of 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi over a 10-minute assessment window. Most critically, the RRB software enforces a strict disablement of the Backspace key throughout the session, making CBTST uniquely demanding.
Following success in CBT Stage 1 and CBT Stage 2, shortlisted candidates attend the CBTST at designated Railway examination centres. The software presents a 300-word English or 250-word Hindi master text passage. Crucially, if an applicant completes the entire text before the 10 minutes expire, the software permits typing the passage again from the start to accumulate additional keystrokes. RRB calculates accuracy using a specialized 5% error concession formula: mistakes up to 5% of total words typed are ignored, while each excess error incurs a heavy penalty (Total Words Typed - [10 × Excess Mistakes]) / 10 = Net Speed. Candidates who fail to reach 30 WPM net (English) or 25 WPM net (Hindi) are strictly disqualified.

RRB NTPC Typing Test — Frequently Asked Questions
1 What is the RRB NTPC typing test speed requirement?
Candidates opting for English medium must achieve a net speed of 30 words per minute (WPM). Candidates opting for Hindi medium must achieve 25 WPM. The test duration is 10 minutes. There is no category-wise relaxation in the speed standard — SC, ST, and OBC candidates must meet the same minimum as General category candidates.
2 Is Backspace allowed in the RRB NTPC typing test?
No. The Backspace key is completely disabled during the RRB NTPC Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST). Arrow keys for cursor repositioning are also disabled. Once a character is typed, it is locked. This is a major difference from SSC exams (CGL/CHSL) where Backspace is allowed. Practise specifically without using Backspace to simulate real exam conditions.
3 How is the RRB NTPC typing test error calculated?
A 5% error tolerance is provided on your total words typed. Errors within this 5% buffer are ignored entirely. Beyond the 5% threshold: Full Mistakes (wrong word, omission, or extra word) count as 1 point each; Half Mistakes (spacing, punctuation, or capitalization errors) count as 0.5 points each. Net Speed = (Total Words Typed − (Excess Mistake Points × 10)) ÷ 10 minutes. If the result meets or exceeds 30 WPM (English) or 25 WPM (Hindi), you qualify.
4 Can I retype the passage if I finish early in RRB NTPC?
Yes. If you complete the passage before the 10-minute timer ends, you are allowed to retype the passage from the beginning. This can increase your total words typed, which in turn increases your 5% error tolerance buffer — a useful strategy to boost your net score.
5 Which posts in RRB NTPC require the typing test?
The typing test (CBTST) is mandatory only for posts with clerical and typist responsibilities: Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper, and Senior Time Keeper. Other NTPC posts (e.g. Station Master, Traffic Assistant, Commercial Apprentice) do not require a typing test.
6 Is the RRB NTPC typing test qualifying or marks-based?
The CBTST is purely qualifying. It does not contribute marks to the final merit list. Final selection is based on your CBT Stage 1 and Stage 2 scores. However, failing the CBTST means disqualification from all posts that require the typing test.
7 How should I practise for the RRB NTPC typing test without Backspace?
The most important training adaptation is to disable Backspace completely during all practice sessions. Use a text editor with Backspace disabled or use dedicated RRB-style practice tools. Focus on typing at a steady, controlled pace — aim for 34–36 WPM during practice so nerves do not drop you below 30 WPM on exam day. Prioritise avoiding omissions and word substitutions, as these count as full mistakes and are penalised heavily.
